Before one looked out on Co-op City from this vantage point, there was Freedomland amusement park in the early 1960s, and prior to that were many blocks of summer cottages, some converted to year-round, that were washed away in the Hurricane of 1938. When I lived in New Rochelle, and before Freedomland was built, I'd ride my bike down from New Rochelle and pedal around the abandoned streets. Somewhere I think I still have an ancient Bronx street map which shows the grid....
