The station has multiple tracks because there are multiple railroads.
The main line from New Haven merges with Pan Am Railways. It's the latest name for Springfield Terminal which was a combination of the Delaware & Hudson, Boston & Maine, and Maine Central Railroads.

CSX (the former Boston & Albany) runs perpendicular to the Amtrak main line. Amtrak's Lake Shore Limited runs on these tracks (# 1 and #2).

Looks like canopies are being installed on tracks 3 and 4.
