New Hope and Ivyland RR

Steam Locomotive #40 on an excursion train on the New Hope & Ivyland Railroad in New Hope, PA. This locomotive, a 2-8-0 Consolidation, was built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia in 1925 originally for the Lancaster & Cheshire Railway of South Carolina. After being sold in 1947 to the Cliffside RR in North Carolina, the locomotive in 1962 was bought for preservation by Steam Trains, Inc, and stored for a time in Wilmington, DE and St. Clair, PA. In 1966 it was moved to New Hope, PA for use by the New Hope & Ivyland. After serving only for the 1967 season, it was retired until a major rebuilding in 1974, after which it operated NH&I excursion trains until 1986, when it was retired as unserviceable. After the Bucks County Railroad Preservation and Restoration Corporation purchased the railroad in 1990 they engaged their own mechanical forces and those of the Strasburg Rail Road in extensively rebuilding the 40, which was completed in June 1991. Now in excellent mechanical condition, the 40 currently serves the New Hope and Ivyland as its only operating steam locomotive.
