Lower Loop

The railroad was originally built with switchbacks to cross over Bald Mountain. They created so many operational problems, an engineer from the Louisville & Nashville designed a double loop to pass over the mountain. The change in elevation from the lower to upper loops is 426
feet.

The train was on the lower track and is coming towards the top.
